Maharaja Hari Singh didn't sign a different Instrument of Accession | Misinformation campaign in Pakistan | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 17: Misinformation campaign has been launched in Pakistan about the Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh on October 26, 1947 and accepted by the Government of India. Those who have launched this no-holds-barred campaign in Pakistan have been seeking to tell the people that "Kashmir has always been an eyesore for Hindu communalists"; that "the Instrument of Accession was signed by Maharaja Hari Singh on the condition that its people would decide the dispute, retaining autonomy"; and that the promise was broken by Delhi". Identical campaign has been going on Kashmir since 1947 itself with almost all Kashmiri leaders accusing Delhi of subverting the Instrument of Accession and bringing the state under the ambit of hundreds of Central laws and provisions of the Indian Constitution, thus eroding the "state's special status" and bringing the state almost at par with other states of the Union. Hardly any Kashmiri leader has ever said that accession of the state was final and irrevocable, which actually is the case. It appears that there are elements who are working in tandem to mislead the common people, as also the international community. It's a matter of grave concern that no serious attempt has been made by Delhi to call the Pakistani and Kashmiri bluff and put things in perspective. What is the truth? Was the Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh was different? The truth is that the Instrument of Accession signed by Maharaja Hari Singh was similar to the ones signed by the rulers of 560-odd other Princely States. The Instrument of Accession was framed by the State Department (Union Home Ministry), and not by the princes, and it was based on what was provided by the Indian Independence Act of 1947. The princely states had only two options under the Indian Independence Act: Choice between India and the newly created Pakistan taking into consideration the contiguity factor. And that's all. |
