Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 17: Two founding leaders of the PDP have given yet another jolt to their party as they have finally decided to bid adieu to it and join hands with rival National Conference. The formal announcement in this regard is expected to be made within three days from now.
One of the two leaders hailing from north Kashmir served as a cabinet minister in Mehbooba Mufti led coalition in the state. Prior to that, he was inducted into the cabinet by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed when the coalition of BJP and PDP was formed in March 2015.
On February 14, 2017, a cabinet revamp was done by the then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti. The leader in question however got so disgruntled by the change in his portfolio that he refused to assume his new office for over two months. It was later after hectic persuasions from his colleagues that he finally agreed to accept the department whose responsibility was entrusted upon his shoulders. As per the sources, that was the first time when the leader got annoyed with the PDP leadership and begun working amid much reluctance.
At present, as per the sources privy to this development, this PDP leader has decided to leave the party and join National Conference. Several meetings between him and NC leaders have taken place over the issue.
Another veteran PDP leader from south Kashmir who has served as a senior minister when PDP came to power in 2002 also has decided to leave the party he cofounded once and join National Conference. The relations between him and the party leadership came under the cloud this year in March when his son was sacked as additional advocate general by the Mehbooba Mufti government in the state.
The founder PDP member and once considered as close confidante of former Chief Minister late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, he was appointed vice chairman of the Waqf Board in 2015. Last year, however, he was forced to resign without any reason.
As his son was sacked from his post, he issued a public statement and ridiculed the party.
"Sycophants surrounding the chief minister are responsible for my son's exit. They complained and got my son removed. It is only because I spoke truth at the rally," he had said.
According to him, he was concerned about the PDP because he had given his blood and sweat for the party. "But drastic steps like removing my son won't deter me from my work. Sycophants have no public support and they are least concerned about the party. We have formed PDP by giving our blood and sweat," he said.
Meanwhile, as per the insiders, the PDP with each passing day is becoming a sinking ship with this month; eight of its legislators have left the party. "Imran Ansari, his uncle Abid Ansari, Abaas Wani, Haseeb Drabu, Raja Aijaz Ali are few who have formally announced their decision of resigning from the party. There are more leaders who are about to follow the suit and it is feared that the party is reduced to rubble," says a party functionary wishing not to be named.
