Despite threat to life, Raj Bhawan withdraws Prof Mattoo's security!

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 27: In yet another shocking development, the Raj Bhawan has withdrawn security of globally-acclaimed academic and authority on Kashmir, Prof Amitabh Mattoo.
Prof Mattoo, who was also Advisor of the cadre of Cabinet minister in the previous government, is believed to have long been having a threat to life from terror groups, as he is seen among the most high-profile track II diplomats on Kashmir and India-Pakistan relations.
Sources said the security at his residence in Srinagar and his personal escort has been withdrawn -making his life and property vulnerable to terror attacks.
Ironically his security has been withdrawn at a time when the terror strikes have been on rise in restive Kashmir and he lives in a locality which has witnessed some of the deadliest terror attacks in the past.
Sources said some senior officials in the Civil Secretariat and the Jammu and Kashmir Police withdrew Prof Mattoo's the security to allegedly "settle personal scores on the instructions from their political masters who continue to enjoy power in Governor's rule."
A senior official told the newspaper that security of Prof Mattoo is not a routine matter and that his life has been put to serious risk. "See Prof Mattoo is not any politician. He is a very high profile person of international repute. From targeting him to abducting him, anything can benefit the terror groups. One wonders how can government play with life of such a person when the assassination of journalist Shujaat Bukhari should have served an eye-opener. J&K is under President's rule and Government should have behaved responsibly," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
The daily Early Times has already learnt about some alleged "deals" in the withdrawal of security of many of those who have a genuine threat to their lives whereas security cover is being unduly provided to some "Aira Ghairas and Natthu Khairas".
The newspaper will soon come up a with a series of reports to expose how the institution of providing security is being allegedly "run like an industry" that too during President's rule.
Amid withdrawal of security of some of those who have perceptible threat to their lives, what has been most conspicuous is the silence of Governor SP Malik.
Despite repeated attempts the Raj Bhawan couldn't be contacted for comments.
Prof Mattoo was also not available for comments.
