Opposition to new parties in Kashmir a sign of Abdullah's frustration | Fear of defeat or? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 4: The rise of new political parties in the Kashmir Valley has upset NC president Farooq Abdullah and his son and party vice-president Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah has claimed that "at least 6 new political parties have been founded in Kashmir during the last few days" and they "are founded to split the Muslim votes to harm Kashmir" (read NC). He didn't name these political parties, but it was obvious that he was referring to the parties like the one floated by former bureaucrat Shah Faesal. Earlier, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah had accused New Delhi of creating PDP. The PDP was founded in 1999 by late Mufti Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti. Omar Abdullah has been terming as a "conspiracy" the formation of new parties in the state and, at the same time, asking, "why no new parties are being established in Jammu province?". He has also been claiming that "now each and every mohalla in Kashmir has a leader and this trend will hurt Kashmir". The fractured verdict will harm the people of Kashmir has been his major refrain. He has been asking the people of Kashmir to vote in one direction so that the ruling party could dictate terms to New Delhi. Farooq Abdullah is saying the same and urging the people of Kashmir to remain vigilant. He has been trying to create an impression that the RSS-BJP combine has been responsible for the creation of new political parties in Kashmir and their whole objective is to harm the Kashmir Valley. In fact, both the father and the son are trying to tell the people of Kashmir that things in Kashmir would have been different, had they not delivered fractured mandates in 2002, 2008 and 2014. It was for the first time in 2002 that the people of Kashmir gave a fractured mandate. The NC, which in 1996 had won 57 seats, could win only 28 and the newly founded PDP won 16 seats, all from Kashmir. The story of the 2008 mandate was the same. The NC maintained its tally of 28, but the PDP improved its tally from 16 to 21. Similarly, the 2014 mandate was also a fractured mandate. In 2014, the NC suffered the most. Its tally came down to just 15, the lowest ever, the PDP's tally was 28, the highest ever, and the BJP's tally was 25 (all from Jammu), the highest ever. The manner in which the Abdullahs are criticizing the formation of new parties in the Kashmir Valley is nothing but a sign of their frustration. They have come to believe that their whole edifice has collapsed and that their NC is now no more than another player in the Valley, not the sole player as was the case between 1947 and 1965 and 1975 and 2002. |
