Rain of bombs on poll day in south Kashmir embarrasses police | Unified command meet to discuss failures | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 7: Despite high security in poll bound Pulwama and Shopian districts that went to polls on May 6, militants managed to throw as many as four bombs in two districts, causing embarrassment to police. As per reports, two grenades and a petrol bomb were thrown on polling stations in Pulwama district, one petrol bomb was thrown in Shopian. Defence analysts here have termed it "rain of bombs" that may have contributed to lower voter turnout. Sources said the matter would be taken up at the unified command meet where apart from police, officials from army and paramilitary forces would be present. The meeting is likely to be held in Srinagar where apart from Governor SP Malik, Advisor K Vijay Kumar may also be present. Sources said the police failed to ensure foolproof arrangements for conduct of polls as one senior leader of BJP was killed in south Kashmir only two days before the last leg of pools in Anantnag constituency seat. As already reported, Gul Muhammad Mir, who was the district vice-president of the BJP was killed by terrorists on May 4 in Anantnag district. Despite a threat in the neighborhood district, the police failed to prevent terror activities on the polling day in Pulwams and Shopian. Sources said the conduct of polls was a litmus test for the state police but that it has failed in the same despite having been given additional deployment of thousands of additional forces including paramilitary. A senior functionary said "It was essentially the duty to the state police to put such arrangements in place that no terror activity would take place atleast on the day of polling but unfortunately the same couldn't be delivered on the ground." "When the police couldn't prevent terror attacks on the day of polling, what better can be expected on other days?" the official asked. Sources said New Delhi has taken a serious note of the development as the south Kashmir areas been as seen in "inexperienced hands." "What we are given to understand from ground results is that south Kashmir is just not in able hands and this is a really serious issue which will have to look into," said a politician close to corridors of power in New Delhi. Despite repeated attempts the concerned officials in police couldn't be contacted for comments. |
