On Eid day dozens of forest trees axed in Budgam
Timber smugglers yet to be arrested

BUDGAM, June 7: At a time when the people were busy celebrating the festival of Eid across J&K, some criminal elements taking advantage of the festival were busy looting green gold in Surasyar block of Doodh Ganga forest range in Budgam. Sources say that timber smugglers with the patronage of a local Sarpanch of Kutbal village and some forest officials axed dozens of green trees in forest area of Yusmarg. When the locals alerted forest officials lot of timber was seized but the culprits are yet to be arrested.
Details available with Early Times reveal that timber smugglers in Surasyar forest block of Doodh Ganga range in Budgam on the intervening night of 5th and 6th June axed more than 2 dozen forest trees ( fir and kail variety) in the Yusmarg area. After some locals alerted the forest officials, some timber was seized but from last 2 days the culprits are yet to be arrested by Forest officials and police in spite of the fact that they have been identified already by raiding team of forest officials.
Sources say that timber smugglers namely Bashir Jahara S/O Gul Jahara , Ali Jahara S/O Gul Jahara, Manzoor Rather S/O Rustum Rather all residents of Kutbal and Thera villages of Chadoora are involved in this crime. These smugglers are said to be working on the direction of Aslam Thakkar @ Aslam Khan who happens to be the local Sarpanch of Kutbal village.
Local residents say that senior forest officers have been informed but no action has been taken against the smugglers who are looting forests in the area in broad day light with active support from Forest officials especially Nazir Ahmad Bhat local Forester.
"We alerted the DFO of Budgam who send a team of Forest officials during the dead of night. The timber was seized by the forest officials but the main accused were never arrested "said Fayaz Ahmad (name changed) a local resident of Branwar.
