GMC Jammu's HDU remains dysfunctional due to non-availability of ventilators | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report Jammu, June 7: The High Dependency Unit (HDU) established last year at Government Medical College Jammu continues to remain dysfunctional due to the non-availability of ventilators, Early Times learnt on Friday. Official sources revealed that the Principal Government Medical College Jammu has placed an order for procurement of 32 ventilators before the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation six months ago but the corporation hasn't yet delivered the equipments mandatory for making the High Dependency Unit (HDU) functional. They said that around Rs 77 Lakh have been spent to establish High Dependency Unit (HDU). "Structure was existing but we redesigned it and renovated the ward having 13 bathrooms. Mechanical wing also installed central heating system and electrical wing installed LED lights," an engineer posted in GMC Jammu told this newspaper. He said that he is himself privy to the fact that the issue of procurement of ventilators was raised and flagged in many meetings. Officials at GMC blamed JKMSCL for the delay and said that an ortho theatre has now been made functional in High Dependency Unit (HDU). Earlier in a press statement, the GMC Jammu had also disclosed that they have shifted ortho theatre in HDU ward. "The Ortho theatre is to be upgraded to a modular Ortho Theatre, thus, as per decision and discussion with ortho surgeons, HOD and MS concerned it was found feasible that the High Dependency Unit (HDU) infrastructure of which is ready but machinery and equipments is awaited from JKMSCL can be used with little changes such as partitions and doors which were installed," reads the statement. The officials at GMC Jammu said that it was decided that the High Dependency Unit will be used for one and a half month till ortho theater is upgraded by executive agency. "Unfortunately, Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation is failing every health institution in the state because they aren't delivering the equipments and medicines to these institutions at right time," officials alleged. Medical Superintend GMC Jammu, Dr Dara Singh also confirmed to Early Times that they haven't yet received ventilators from Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation. "We have written to Principal GMC Jammu many times. The issue of procurement of ventilators was also taken up with JKMSC as well but we haven't received the ventilators yet," he said. The General Manger, JKMSCL Dr Iqbal admitted that they haven't yet delivered ventilators and other equipments to GMC Jammu, however said that the tendering process for the procurement has been completed. "We have completed the tendering process and rate contract has been done. Since all the equipments are being procured from abroad we have to ensure that they deliver these equipments in due time," he said. Dr Iqbal said that GMC Jammu had placed procurement order worth 5 Cr rupees before JKMSCL. |
