Channi Rama grapples with messy civic issues, erratic water supply | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 24: Carrying forward his mass contact programme, the Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta today visited Channi Rama area near Armed Police Line and its adjoining localities where people from all walks of life while interacting with him expressed their displeasure over the neglect they are facing at the hands of the administration, successive governments and those who represented them in the State Legislature. The aggrieved residents of the area told Munish Gupta that dilapidated lanes, clogged drains, heaps of rubbish in open and irregular water supply have made their lives miserable adding that they are unable to find a viable solution to the problems being faced by them as there is nobody who pays any heed to their pleas. One of the residents Bimla told Munish that the locality is in dire need of a proper sewage system as the drains are fully choked while the inhabitants are confronting a major problem in the shape of erratic water supply. "The sewage system is in complete shambles in our locality. A nallah in the vicinity has not been covered due to which foul smell emanates in the entire area while the situation of water supply in is so pathetic that the inhabitants are forced to buy expensive water tankers to meet the demand of potable water after regular intervals," said Bimla. Few other inhabitants of the area like Gouri Manhas and Zulfiqar Ali too raised the issue of poor water supply and had been also critical of the fact that the lanes of the locality were never refurbished for the last several years now due to which most of the streets are in a dilapidated condition. "We are literally craving for water. There is hardly any water supply to quench our thirst. The residents are dependent on private water tankers for getting one of the necessities of life. Isn't it ironical that we have to buy water after every fortnight in a so called developed city? The lanes in the area are damaged to the extent that it is quite hard to differentiate whether there are pot holes on the roads or the vice versa," said Gouri Manhas. While Zufiqar Ali said that the residents are left on the mercy of God as they are getting irregular water supply adding that the duration of supply is too short as the water is being provided for less than half an hour which is inadequate to fulfill the needs of a household. Mushtaq Ahmad, Shahid Hafeez, Mohd Yaqoob, Amit Gandotra, Shamim and Shamshad Begum minced no words in expressing their displeasure over the condition of roads and other civic issues in the locality. "This locality had come up about 20 years ago but network of roads in the area was never developed. Nobody cared to revamp the streets either by blacktopping or fixing tiles. For us there is no happening on the development front as even the street lights have not been provided to the locality. We installed the street lights on our own. Whosoever remained MLA from Gandhi Nagar Assembly Constituency did not deem it fit to pay any attention towards such a basic necessity," said Mushtaq Ahmad. Faiz Ahmad while highlighting the difficulties being faced by the inhabitants informed that they are facing the problem of poor drainage system and dilapidated roads. "We are literally fed up with the clogged drains. The entire locality is distraught with the poor sewerage. While we are forced live along drains full of filth and pot-holed roads, the authorities concerned as well as the local political representatives have no time to rectify these problems," said Faiz Ahmad. Parvez Mohd and Arsha Begum told Munish Gupta that the lanes in the locality are in shambles for several years but nobody from the concerned authorities has bothered to get it repaired adding that face-lifting of lanes and drains will be more than enough for the residents of the area. "We hardly remember when was the last time that blacktopping of the roads was carried out. Most of the lanes are in pathetic condition as they have developed pot holes which are an open invitation for a mishap; however, the authorities are least bothered for the improvement of lanes in the area. We only seek smooth roads and nothing else," said Parvez and Arsha. A resident Manmeet Kour said that people in the area are generally fed up with the problem of dilapidated lanes and overflowing drains due to blockage arising out of waste material adding that several vacant plots in the locality have also turned into mini garbage dumping sites which is another big source of nuisance for the inhabitants. "The garbage is being dumped either in the vacant plots or near the drains as there is no provision of dustbin for collection of junk. The roads are in bad shape but the authorities have turned deaf ears towards their repair. There is severe problem of water logging due to chocked drains which needs to be addressed at the earliest," said Manmeet Kour. |
