Kashmir suicides claim more males than females | ‘Attempts by females are cry for help’ | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 10: Around ten persons consume poison in Kashmir on an average daily, according to data furnished by the SMHS hospital. Most of the cases, the data reveals, come from South and North Kashmir. The data, however, is silent about deaths due to poisoning. A study conducted earlier by the Department of Psychiatry, GMC Srinagar corroborates the above data. Most of the people who complete suicide, the study says, are males of the age group 25 - 34 while most of the attempts made by females are four times para suicides and seven times deliberate self harm. Threre was a time when Jammu and Kashmir had the lowest suicide rate in the sub-continent. But times have changed and so have the trends in this state. As per the statistics provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) the suicide rate in Jammu and Kashmir has increased by 44.3% since 2012. Independent studies suggest suicide is becoming the second common cause of unnatural death in the Valley. The experts give reasons ranging from unemployment to failed love affair for the unfortunate trend. According to them the reasons are too trivial to trigger an emotional response. The conflict, they said definitely has had a toll on mental health in Kashmir but the reasons for recent suicides especially by women reflect disorganization of both the individual and society in Kashmir. Contrary to common belief, the suicides in Kashmir kill more males than females. Suicide attempts by women, according to them are mostly a cry for help. "Among women it was mostly para-suicide as they (women) attempt suicide but rarely complete it. The males on the other hand complete the act and either die on the spot or on way to hospital. |
