Early Times Report
ANANTNAG, Mar 9: Two labourers were killed while two others injured in an explosion at an ammunition depot of the Army in South Kashmir's Anantnag district on Monday.
The explosion took place at Army's Kundroo Ammunition Depot near the Ammunition Technician Area (ATA) on Monday afternoon, a police official said.
He said two labourers were killed on the spot due to the explosion, while two others were injured. They have been rushed to the hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, resident of Pahloo and Gulzar Ahmad Khan, resident of Uttersoo Maidphall areas of the district, the police said. The two injured are Fida Hussain and Shabir Ahmad. Injured labourers were shifted to Anantnag Medical College for specialized treatment were their condition is said to have improved and are out of danger.
Khundru is one of the biggest ammunition depots in North India. There have been few such incidents in the past as well. In 2007, 18 people were killed in a fire which continued for days after an accidental blast at the depot. Army has suffered a loss of around 13 Crore ruppes due to the explosion of explosives during the fire.
The residents of Kundroo and adjacent areas continue blame Army for sporadic blasts and explosion in the area that take the lives of human beings and animals. "After 2007 fire incident, the army has failed to clear and sanitize the areas around Kundroo Ammunition Depot," they allege.
