EARLY TIMES REPORT

VIJAYPUR, Mar 9: Threat of life and property looms over commuters using old Devika Bridge Vijaypur on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway as surface near the foundation of the bridge has scoured due to swift flow of water.
A big-hole which has developed just beneath adjoining one end of the bridge has been posing grave threat as it can lead to its collapse but the district administration as well as National Highway Authority of India is not taking the matter seriously.
Sources told Early Times that the bridge over Devika River is getting damaged due to ditch just below the bridge, which is becoming bigger in size with the passage of time and can cause its sinking particularly during rains water but authority concerned seems least bothered towards this grave issue.
Chairman Vijaypur Municipal Committee, Deepak Kumar, while talking to Early Times informed that the bridge has been receiving potential damage due to pit near pillar of bridge and it was informed to the concerned authority many a times to take immediate measures to repair it.
“Many years ago, due to flood in the Devika river, a part of bridge was collapsed and after that it was repaired but going by the pathetic condition of the bridge now the similar incident is in the offing,” he alleged.
When contacted Project Manager NHAI, Ajay Kumar, told Early Times that the proposal of reconstruction of old bridge has been sent to Government of India for its approval. He expressed hope that soon proposal will be approved and tender process will be initiated and meanwhile the damaged portion of bridge will be repaired.
Meanwhile, Deepak Kumar also pointed out the issue of garbage dumping in the river. “It is very sacred river for the people of entire Samba district but now it has been seen that people are polluting it by dumping garbage, septic tank water, debris etc.” he informed.
