Kashmir colleges to get CCTV surveillance | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 9: In a bid to improve the security network and surveillance in militancy infested Kashmir, the government is contemplating to install CCTV cameras at the colleges in the valley. Sources said the government has decided to install the surveillance cameras in a phased manner whereas the process would be started for the colleges in the summer capital of Srinagar. Sources said the plan was discussed at a high level meeting on security and educational scenario. The colleges in Srinagar that will be getting the cameras installed on priority are the ones that used to be “hub of anti-national protests” in the last few years. “There were some colleges that had become infamous for frequent protest and such institutions are among our priority,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. He said the concerned universities and colleges have started the installation process and that a guarded control room would store database of the video-footage. A senior official said apart from security point of view, the installation of cameras would help to improve discipline at the colleges. “The movement of students will under the lens and thus each of them will try to behave more responsibly,” said the authorities at a college in Srinagar. He said the CCTVs would also be installed in classrooms. But the official was not sure if the cameras to be installed inside the classrooms would be microphone-enabled or not. “Usually CCTVs don’t have microphones but it’s being discussed if CCTVs proposed to be installed in the classrooms should be equipped with the audio facility,” the official said. Official sources said the CCTVs were being installed as per recommendations of the expert committees who have given the specifications about the implementation of the project. It is pertinent to mention that the government is struggling to ensure that no educational institutions remain free from protests in future so that peace returns to Kashmir at an earliest and educational activities go on smoothly. |
