Don’t wait for mishap, cover open drains at Nai Basti: Munish to officials | Our pleas have fallen into deaf ears, say residents | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 22: Editor-in-Chief Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Sunday urged the authorities to cover the open drains at Nai Basti area near Shastri Nagar. Munish, who will be contesting the forthcoming assembly elections, as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency said, “Residents of Nai Basti area are facing immense hardships due to open drains in the area. If the issue is not addressed it can lead to a mishap.” He said, “Authorities need to wake up before something untoward happens. It’s the duty of the concerned officials to address the issues confronting the residents. They cannot leave the people on God’s mercy.” Munish said, “Providing basic amenities is the duty of the government. People at the helm cannot just turn their backs and remain unconcerned.” Meanwhile, residents of Nai Basti while talking to Early Times said that these drains used to be covered with steel meshing but these were left open for a proposed work to upgrade the existing sewerage system about a year back, but since then several drains in narrow lanes of Nai Basti are yet to be covered. “These open drains are posing a grave threat to local residents as well commuters,” residents added. “The situation is worse in the lanes which are in close proximity to the vegetable market area. The uncovered drains can lead to serious accidents. Pedestrians are at a risk of facing mishaps. The steel meshes which were removed for the so-called upgradation work were never replaced,” said Jaswinder. “Our pleas to cover these uncovered drains have fallen flat on the deaf ears,” he added. The residents complained about the pungent smell of the sewage water emanating from these drains. “The open drains are not only an invitation for a mishap but they are also a big nuisance for the residents as the drains get choked due to garbage flowing into these drains. Filthy water from the drains flows onto the streets but the authorities have been neglecting the issue,” the residents said. Several others expressed serious concerns over number of people having fallen in these drains in the recent past. “Multiple incidents have led to injuries to children and elderly people. During night we can’t walk as the drains are lying uncovered and anyone of us can fall into it,” the residents said. “Through the medium of Early Times, we again request the authorities to fix the problem at the earliest since a covered drain system was very much there but the steel meshing was removed from several spots for the for the so-called upgradation work without any planning as the job to execute the updgradation was never taken up,” they added. |
