UDHAMPUR, Mar 22: Though the "Janata Curfew" appeal made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was meant to voluntarily stay indoors so as to minimize the effect of coronavirus spread but the Udhampur Police it seems misunderstood it as the imposition of curfew by the administration as the cops at several places in the town misbehaved with those who were out on roads.
Narrating one such act of police high handedness, Sandeep Tharmatt, a pharmacist of Health Department, who is deputed on an emergency duty at Railway Station in COVID-19 Surveillance team, said that a police officer misbehaved with him while he was going to attend his duty.
"As usual, I left home for duty and was stopped at several places by police on the way but was allowed to move on after showing my Identity card. Upon reaching Slathia Chowk, I was stopped by an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Jammu Kashmir Police, who directed me to return back home," said Sandeep.
"I repeatedly requested the police officer to allow me so that I could perform my duty at the railway station, however, instead of paying heed to my requests the ASI all of a sudden started to slap me and indulged in unruly behaviour," he added.
Following the incident, the Pharmacist called up the Chief Medical Officer Udhampur after whose intervention Sandeep was allowed to move forward.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Medical Employees Federation has condemned the police misbehaviour with an employee of the Health Department.
Dheeraj, president of Jammu and Kashmir Medical Employees Federation (JKMEF) said that Sandeep Tharmatt, a pharmacist who is appointed at Railway Station had to face misbehavior of a police team led by an ASI adding that the cops even assaulted him due to which he got injured and had to be provided with medical aid.
He said that when the DDC had ordered that all essential services employees were exempted from "Janta Curfew" because they have to perform their duties in this hour of crisis then why the cops roughed him up.
JKMEF strongly condemned this type of police highhandedness and demanded strong action against the erring cop.
