GRS assigned frontline door to door COVID 19 survey seeks protection kits
We deserve absorption in department, incentives at par with regular employees, salary as per MWA: GRS

Jammu April 11: As the government of India prepare for all out war against the COVID 19 pandemic that had claim the lives of more than 90000 and effected more than 16 lakh people worldwide, the Gram Rozgar Sewak commonly known as GRS are emerging as the frontline workers who had played key role in tracking down the people in respective Panchayats and now Government has assigned them additional job to track the travel history of the people by way off door to door survey of people in villages beside they (GRS) along with other employees of the Rural Development Department and Panchayat Raj (RDD&PR) has been assigned the task of preparing the masks and its distribution at Panchayat level—thus making them vulnerable to infection as a result of which there is chaos among these consolidated employees of the RDD&PR who are being merely paid Rs. 6000-7000 per month as compared to other regular employees of the department who had been assigned with less risky job as compared to GRS who are now demanding protection kits as well as incentives at par with the regular Government employee.

Speaking to “Early Times”, President GRS Association Kishtwar Ajaiz Ahmed Sheikh said that since there appointments in the RDD&PR department—they are playing its part in every situation whether its Assembly Elections, Parliamentary Elections, Health Survey, implementation of Government run schemes, Agriculture survey and many other responsibilities assigned by the Government and the department from time to time added that even under present situation which is an open war against unseen enemy—GRS are playing its part in tracking down the people who had travel history from respective Panchayats.

“We track many people from Panchayats— Job card data help us lot in tracing the people and we are doing it effectively—GRS are also the part of the teams managing various Quarantine centers in Kishtwar District—in fact GRS are playing its part throughout Union Territory of J&K” Said Ajaiz Sheikh,

He said that they never hesitate in discharging their duties—but it is the government who always betrayed them by not concealing to the demands of GRS who are demanding permanent absorption in RDD&PR department or at least government should paid us incentives at par with other regular employees of RDD&PR department.

Ajaiz Sheikh further said that the GRS even are being denied the salaries as per the minimum wages act that has come into force in the UT of J&K.

He said that the Government consider the long pending demands of the GRS at the time when they (GRS) are playing key role as frontline workers under COVID 19 pandemic.

Bilal Ahmed Ganie, GRS from Shopian District of Kashmir valley which has become the epicenter of Corona Virus told the Early Times that the Sectary to the Government, Department of RDD&PR had issued an order—ordering framing of the committees at Panchayat level for promoting universal usage of mask by every inhabitant of Block/Panchayat, Awareness regarding promotion of social distancing, hand wash and general cleanliness beside also order for assisting District Administration regarding identification, isolation and treatment of COVID 19 patients, effective care of special attention categories like elderly, disabled, pregnant ladies, chronically ill persons added that the duties assigned to the committees will directly expose them to COVID 19 suspect which is a very risk job to handle.

GRS Bilal Ganie said that every GRS is ready to work effectively with concern District Administration, but the government should ensure their safety and security. He said that government must provide insurance cover for every frontline workers dealing with the COVID 19 pandemic like it had introduce for health workers.

Several other GRS told the Early Times that whenever Government faces any difficulties, they utilize them to achieve desirable results.

They said that they are even not being paid regularly and called for immediate release of all pending salaries as per the minimum wages Act beside urged upon the government to consider their long pending demands submitted to the government from time to time.

“Let’s join hand to defeat the Corona Virus—lets come together and save the people from the ill effect of this deadly virus by spreading awareness at zero level” maintain Ajaiz Ahmed Sheikh, President GRS Association Kishtwar.
