Improve, strengthen municipal infrastructure and services : Munish tells admin | Deprived of basic facilities, allege residents of Lane No 10, Sector-7 in Guru Nanak Nagar | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 17: Editor-in-Chief Early Times, Munish Gupta, has urged the administration to improve citizens’ access to quality urban services through enhanced municipal infrastructure and to further strengthen the institutional capacities of administrative setups. Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said, “Development of Lane No 10 of Sector 7 in Guru Nanak Nagar area is almost negligible. Even though the area is close to posh localities, but it is far from civic amenities.” He said that not only the provision of all civic amenities should be made but the administration must also ensure that the quality of the facilities should also be better. “The quality of facilities that are allotted presently to the general public of Lane No 10 in Sector 7 by the government and the concerned agencies simply cannot be described as civic amenities. There should be continuous improvement in the infrastructure so as to make people’s life more at ease,” said Munish. Meanwhile, residents of Lane No 10, Sector 7 in Guru Nanak Nagar while speaking to Early Times alleged that they are deprived of basics like paved roads and drainage. “Most of the roads in our area have turned into rubble at several places, increasing manifold the risk of accidents. We made several requests to the concerned authorities to re-carpet all the roads that have been uprooted but no avail,” the locals alleged. Residents said that the basic facilities are dismal rather negligible in the area as the authorities never bother to augment the existing infrastructure despite making several pleas in this regard by the people residing here. “We are putting up in the area since long. But it is sad to see that the government has failed to put in place even basic facilities like roads. The extent of the civic problems in the area is being felt by those residing here on daily basis but the administration has failed to pay any attention to improve the existing facilities,” said the irate residents. Several residents complained that development of public infrastructure in their area has gone for a toss despite the mushrooming of several houses. “Hundreds of families are living in the area but have had no proper access to underground drainage network or open drainage network, roads and other civic amenities for years,” the residents said “Apart from the lack of basic public infrastructure, we do not even have a provision to dump garbage. Forget about door to door collection, we have to find a place on our own to dump garbage and people are indiscriminately dumping in available vacant land even if it is amidst residences,” added residents. Several other locals said that the drains in their area always remain choked, adding that though the authorities know about the issue, they never bother to provide any solutions for the problem. “The muck and garbage piled up along the drains are not removed on regular basis. Thus, whenever it rains, the dirt finds its way to the drains and chokes them,” said the residents.
