Woman killed, another injured, several families shifted to safer places | Cross border shelling in Uri sector | | S TAHIR-UL HAQ Early Times Report
URI (BARAMULLA), June 12: A 40-year-old woman was killed, another injured, several families shifted and many houses got partially damaged in an alleged shelling by Pakistan along the Line of Control in Uri sector of this north Kashmir district on Friday. A senior police official said that, Indian and Pakistan armies on Friday exchanged heavy gunfire across the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector. “There was heavy gunfire and exchange of mortar shells in Hajipeer sector along the LoC due to which people got panic and shifted to safer places, while as several shells landed in Nambla, Saidpora,Thajal, Silikote and adjoining villages, the official said. He said that, a middle aged woman was killed in alleged shelling by Pakistan along the LoC in Uri area on Friday; and she has been identified as Akhter Begum w/o Zahoor Ahmad Chachi r/o Batgran village due to shelling. While as a 35 year old woman, Parveena Begum w/o Shabir Ahmad r/o Nambla Futawali suffered minor injuries and was later shifted to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Uri for advanced treatment, the official added. Nisar Ahmad Khan a local resident of Uri informed early times over the telephone and said that, on Friday morning, at least ten families comprised of 50 persons were shifted to safer places in wake of heavy mortar shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of this north Kashmir district. These persons belonging to different villages of Salikote were shifted to NHPC colony Bandi Uri, and the senior officials from the administration have visited these affected families and all arrangements have been made for their stay, said Khan. Another local resident of Uri said that, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Uri Reyaz Ahmad Malik took stock of the prevailing situations and met these affected families. The people fleeing from the LoC are being kept in Government Girls Higher Secondary School Uri and if the situation gets worse than other government buildings may be kept ready. Sources said there was an exchange of fire that created panic in Churunda, Salikote, Saidpora, Tilawari, Batgranh, Balkote, Nambla, Mothal and Thajal, Hathlanga, Gowhalan villages of Uri town. Sources said that Pakistan army opened fire on Indian army posts and civilian areas in Hajipeer sector of Uri town. The soldiers manning the fence also responded strongly, after which the firing was stopped. Several shells landed in Nambla, Saidpora, Thajal, Silikote and adjoining villages, and some houses and vehicles have also been partially damaged by the shelling. Meanwhile Srinagar based defence spokesperson, Rajesh Kalia told early times that, on June 12/2020, in the morning hours Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Rampur sector of Baramulla district by firing mortars and other weapons.
