Only 2,000 pilgrims per day for this year’s Amarnath yatra | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 12: Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has not only decided to hold this year’s Amarnath yatra for a shorter duration of just two weeks in the wake of coronavirus pandemic but it is also contemplating to restrict the number of pilgrims paying obeisance at the holy cave shrine on daily basis. According to sources, this year’s Amarnath pilgrimage, which will commence on July 21 and culminate on August 3, is likely to witness not more than 2000 pilgrims per day, adding that the yatra will be allowed only via the Baltal route. “It all depends on the government’s approval now. If it gives a go ahead then there will be curtailed yatra duration. Only 2,000 pilgrims are likely to be allowed per day for the yatra from the shorter Baltal route,” said sources, adding that except for the sadhus, pilgrims above 55 years of age will not be allowed to undertake the yatra. Sources further said that all those who want to undertake the Amarnath Yatra must be in possession of COVID-19 negative certifications. “The delimiting of yatra was necessitated keeping in view the coronavirus pandemic. It is, therefore, mandatory to possess a COVID-19 negative certificate for all the pilgrims. The pilgrims will be thoroughly scanned for COVID- 19 infection on entry into J&K before they are allowed to embark upon the further journey to perform yatra,” said sources. Sources said that the maintenance of track on Baltal route is yet to be taken up, adding that the authorities are waiting for the official nod to initiate the process. It is pertinent to mention here that the Amarnath yatra was originally scheduled to begin on June 23 through the twin tracks of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district and end on August 3 on the day of Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan). |
