BGSBU Engineering School struggles to fill allotted seats
Against 300, only 130 applications received for admission

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 1: The School of Engineering and Technology Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University has reportedly failed to get required applications to fill its allotted seats.
Sources informed Early Times that against the capacity of 300 seats the School of Engineering has received only 130 applications from the candidates. “Though the school of Engineering and Technology of BGSBU has good reputation and prestige in the academic circles but due to some policy decisions taken by the administration, the prospective candidates had started showing unwillingness towards the courses”, sources said.
According to documents in possession of Early Times, the School which offered B.Tech, had recorded an upward trend from year 2011 to 2013.
The school had 300 allotted seats and had received 1203 applications in the year 2011, which rose to 1285 in the year 2012 and 1534 in the year 2013. The next three years, showed a slight downward trend but still there were sufficient number of applicants for the course.
In the year 2014, the School had received 1468 applications while 1262 applications in 2015 and 1108 applications in the year 2016. After the year 2016, an abrupt decrease in the number of applications could be seen as 934 applications were received in the year 2017, while 572 in the year 2018 and 384 applications in the year 2019 and 130 in the year 2020.
According to sources, though there was a general lack of interest among the students towards the Engineering but the decline in BGSBU’s school was something more serious and it was mostly due to wrong policy decisions taken by administration. “Though the same School had received a World Bank funded project (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) to the tune of Rs 15 Crore in the year 2017 but instead of rewarding the brain behind the project, the administration had punished him by sidelining him from the project as well as the post of Dean Academic Affairs”, sources said, adding that the post of the Coordinator of the World Bank funded project was given to another person.
Many more similar decisions, which were detrimental to the academic health of the institution, were taken by the varsity administration, which were also responsible for the declining image of the institution as well as the number of applicants. “As the Union government has been emphasizing on granting autonomous status to the academic institutions and Universities are also under government’s watch. The shortfall of candidates for the course will impact the collection of revenue for the institute and will further deteriorate the situation and it will ultimately affect the future of institution”, sources said.
