Is Farooq Abdullah’s airport meeting symptomatic to NC’s policy shift ? | Amid Article 370 cauldron, NC president chairs meet on upgradation of Srinagar airport | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 1: More than a year after the abrogation of Article 370, NC patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah is finally out of the oblivion and on Monday chaired the first meeting with the government officers. Though the meeting was related to the issue of upgradation of Srinagar airport, senior Abdullah’s presence seems to have opened the Pandora’s Box. As per the reports, Abdullah being the MP concerned chaired the meeting which was attended by IGP Kashmir and other senior officials. He stressed the need for upgrading the infrastructure at the aerodrome and starting night flights to boost Kashmir as a travel destination. Amid the on-going political logjam and the debate surrounding it, Dr Farooq Abdullah’s presence in the meeting has clearly hinted that this old gadfly is ready to join hands with the government over the issues pertaining to the development of the region. “This is a very important development. Dr Farooq Abdullah is not somebody who is politically naïve and incorrect. His presence in the meeting has signified the important developments that are going to be witnessed in near future,” says a functionary of his party. He added that through such a measure, Farooq Abdullah is signalling that he would be ready to take part in the developmental activities of the erstwhile state and that besides the politics he is playing at present, his role in administration too cannot be undermined or subsided. Interestingly, just two days before attending the meeting on the airport issue, on Saturday, a high level meeting of National Conference chaired by its patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah was held at its party office. The agenda of the meeting was as per news reports totally focused on discussions for strategy to be adopted for contesting the case filed in the supreme court of the country against abrogation of article 370 and article 35 A and also the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 Enacted to divide the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. Even at that time, there were speculations that Dr Farooq Abdullah was playing ball with the centre and is leaving a room open for negotiating a deal with it in case Supreme court turns down the petition filed by the National Conference against the decision of the central government on abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019 via the presidential order. Also, Dr Farooq has termed Gupkar declaration a valid document and said that he would raise it in the parliament. He added further: “"We all reiterate that we are bound, wholly, by the contents of the Gupkar Declaration and will unwaveringly adhere to it. We are committed to strive for the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A, the Constitution of J-K and the restoration of the state and any division of the state is unacceptable to us. We unanimously reiterate that there can be 'nothing about us without us” |
