Selective permissions issued for mining, business suffers in last 16 months | Tipper Union accuses G&M Deptt of harassment | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 11: The Tipper Union of Samba district has accused the Geology and Mining Department of Samba and Kathua of harassment as the Department is not allowing the mining activity due to which the business has been suffering a lot for the last sixteen months. A strong protest was held today at Samba by the Tipper Union in support of their demands. "We have suffered a huge loss due to COVID-19 as all mining activity was stopped by the administration. It has become difficult for us to pay off loan instalments to the banks due to no work at all but the concerned department has not been doing anything to mitigate our problems," said Madan Singh, Narinder Choudary, Sony Sardar, Naresh Sandhu, Raju Vivek and Ajay Thakur, union member. Other members of Tipper Union said that selective permissions were issued to some tippers for carrying minor minerals for construction work but nothing was done for the other tippers, which have been lying parked without any work. "Not only this, even the vehicles which have been given permission are also being harassed by the G&M Department employees, who stop tippers and impose heavy challans of Rs 25000 forcing us to give them commission," they said. They further said that they had projected their problems before the District Mineral Officer Samba number of times but despite empty assurances nothing has been to sort out their problems so far. When Early Times contacted the District Officer G&M Samba, he ruled out any such allegation of harassment and commission. Meanwhile, when District Officer G&M Department Kathua was contacted he said that he has been following the instructions of higher authority and he would take action against the defaulters for flouting the ban. He further said that as far as the vehicles which have been given permission are concerned, the government had issued permission for continuation of development works and other tippers, which have been plying without permissions will be penalized. |
