Self medication among patients takes heavy toll | Drug license of various chemists cancelled | | S TAHIR-UL HAQ EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 11: Continuing its endeavours to ensure smooth and hassle free public service delivery, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Mohammad Aijaz ordered a special inspection drive during which chemist shops and diagnostic centres were inspected in terms of compliance to various legalities, norms and regulations. According to sources that, In Uri area, the inspection was conducted by the SDM Reyaz Ahmad Malik and concerned officers, in which 21 medical shops were inspected in twin tehsils of Sub Division Uri, out of which 2 have been seized for having no valid documents, while 9 laboratories were inspected out of which 3 have been seized. The DC said that during inspections, special attention is being given to check whether an actual pharmacist is present or not and whether the sale of prescribed drugs is being carried out in the absence of a registered pharmacist and also attention is given regarding the validity of the licences. He also said that continuous monitoring would be carried out in future as well and if any unauthorised shop/drug is detected, then action would be initiated as per law. Meanwhile, the inspection was also carried in Pattan where SDM Pattan along with the concerned officers also conducted inspection of around 20 chemist shops in Pattan Singpora and Hyderbagh. They have also sealed one x-ray plant which was functioning without License in the area, said sources. However here sources said that, in Kashmir valley it has become a norm for the patients to get the drugs without prescriptions and with the result there remains a risk of buying substandard drugs in the absence of proper market checking. It has been observed that self medication has taken many lives in the past, such patients not only become habitual but they also compel the chemists to provide them the drugs, otherwise there should have been clear cut directions to these chemists to provide the drugs on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner. A simple Paracetamol or a cough syrup can become dangerous for the patients if it is not properly prescribed by the doctor. Sources said that the practice has been found among the youth now, who take some drugs without the proper prescription and with the result these youth can become drug addicts and it not only creates problems for themselves but a bigger challenge for the society as well.
