Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 11: In a shocking case of alleged favoritism of an “influential” doctor in Kashmir, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has issued two “contradictory notices” to unseal a building illegally running commercial business in residential locality.
The documents accessed by the Early Times reveal that a building run by a doctor for commercial purpose was sealed after a massive outcry the locals of Nursing Garh locality here who had knocked the doors of Raj Bhawan.
Sources said a few days after sealing the building, the allegedly influential doctor used his “good offices to get the building unsealed.”
The official documents reveal that two notices were issued in favor of the said doctor on December 4, 2020.
Sources said the first notice was issued with directives to unseal the building without any timeframe as to till how long the doctor would run his business in residential locality.
Sources said as the locals raised a hue and cry, the SMC hurriedly issued a fresh notice, giving the doctor two months to explore alternatives.
The locals said the issuance of “contradictory” notifications by the SMC confirmed that the doctor was being unduly supported by the officials in the enforcement wing of the civic body.
“Unless there is some kind of deal, why would a government office issue two ambiguous notifications to benefit the influential man. And why to unseal such an illegal building,” the locals said.
It was reliably learnt that the said doctor is in league with another person running similar commercial activities in a nearby building in the residential locality.
Source said both the persons are known for their “influence for the last 30 years.”
“Unless a high level inquiry is ordered, such frauds will continue to take place,” the locals said.
When contacted a senior official in the SMC refuted the allegations saying there was a mistake in the first order what was corrected in the second order. “That first order was not released formally but a second order was immediately issued and that order will be executed in letter and spirit,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.
He appealed the locals to bear with the situation will the doctor shifts his business from the residential area.
