Healthcare in JK awaits attention | | | The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has brought to fore the importance of upgrading the health infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The pestilence exposed the healthcare in J&K as such things came to fore which had remained under carpet for many years. As the situation is improving and things are looking better it’s high time for the government to work towards taking care of the lacunas that we witnessed during the COVID times. The biggest embarrassment that the authorities at the Government Medical College Jammu faced was that the oxygen plant failed to cater to the high end ventilators that were provided by the Centre for the critically ill patients. Shortage of beds and other life saving equipments also put the helmsmen in a quandary. Now, J&K is no more a State. Its transition into a Union Territory has made people optimistic about things changing for good as J&K is under direct control of the Centre. During the past one and a half year things have become better. But everyone feels that the healthcare facilities need to be improved. The Kashmiri centric rulers who ruled Jammu and Kashmir during the past seven decades just made tall promises about improving the health facilities. But most of their announcements remained confined to papers only. The hospitals, dispensaries and health centers that were to come up in rural areas remained a distant dream. There are many far flung villages in Jammu region where there are no dispensaries and people are left with no option other than shifting sick to the district headquarters. In the process of moving a patient from one place to another precious human lives are lost. Recently, a union minster said that the private players are keen on investing in J&K’s health sector and the government has assured them that they will be provided all the possible support. The private sector is welcome to invest in J&K but the administration needs to pay attention towards the existing set up of the government hospitals in the Union Territory. There are many health centers, dispensaries and hospitals which need to be provided with equipment and staff. Poor and needy people deserve to have a proper health facility in their areas. One hopes that the administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will take major steps to bring healthcare at par with other places. |
