EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 11: Expressing his concern over the rising number of suicide cases among children and teenagers, Nitish Mahajan, BJP Executive Committee member, J&K has called for a warm, communicative atmosphere to keep the youth away from these tendencies. "In last one year, there has been an exponential increase in the suicide cases in the entire country, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. This is a worrying trend, which needs immediate attention on every one's part," Mahajan said while interacting with youth during a meeting held here today. Mahajan said that throat-cutting competition in academics and stressed lifestyle over the years has led to mental illness and depression among the youth. Referring to NCRB report, Mahajan informed that more than 1.39 lakh Indians died by suicide in the year 2019. "What is more worrying however is the fact that 67 per cent of these people, 93,061 were young adults aging 18-45 years," he said. Mahajan said that on their part, parents also need to stay in touch with their children and talk to them about their mental health on a regular basis. "It is unfortunate that even in this age, speaking about mental health is still considered a taboo. This has to go at all costs, now. Parents must not force their choices on their children," he said. "Besides, the youth should remain positive and in touch with their parents. They must share everything with their parents, like they would do with a friend. They must indulge themselves in sports and other activities, and also meditation so as to keep themselves away from depression," he said. |
