Day Dreaming Won’t Help
3/5/2021 11:51:50 PM
Delimitation Commission getting one year extension in Jammu and Kashmir has shattered hopes of power hungry politicians to reap the benefits of power.
The local BJP leaders have been trumpeting that their party would form the next government in the newly carved out J&K UT and people should repose faith on them.
But the ground situation contradicts their claims as the people in Jammu region seem least interested in their slogans and rhetoric. Past experiences of the people have been bitter.
When BJP shared power with Kashmir centric PDP for three and a half years, its ministers and leaders completely forgot the people who had voted for them.
Whenever the elections are held in J&K UT, there is a possibility about BJP paying a heavy price for the lackluster approach of its local leaders. The only factor that can save the saffron party is the popularity of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. People of Jammu in the past have voted for Modi and not for the local candidates.
At many places voters weren’t even aware about the names of candidates who were contesting the elections. For time being all the dreams of local BJP leaders seem to have been dashed as one year extension to the Delimitation Commission means that elections won’t be held in 2021. So these leaders should stop dreaming about power and wait for people to decide their fate.
There is no denial to the fact that political scenario in J&K has changed completely after August 5, 2019, when the Centre scrapped J&K’s special status and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two union territories. Kashmir centric leaders, who till August 4, 2019, used to think that they are undisputed monarchs have lost their addresses and are struggling to keep themselves relevant.
The BJP leaders are aware of the fact that after delimitation process is completed Jammu will come at par with the Valley vis-à-vis distribution of the assembly seats.
There is every possibility about a leader from Jammu region holding chief minister’s office, but that doesn’t mean that he will be from BJP. During the past few years many parties in Jammu have come to fore that can give a tough competition to local BJP leaders. These parties have got full potential to turn the tables on the saffron party. It’s high time for BJP leaders to open their eyes and acknowledge the ground realities. Day dreaming won’t help their cause.
