Be Alert | | | Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has sounded an alert about the possibility of a second wave of COVID-19 breaking out in the country. During his virtual meeting with the chief ministers of different states, PM Modi stressed on the need to take decisive steps to stop the “emerging second peak.” “If we don’t stop this pandemic right now, then there could be a nationwide outbreak. We have to immediately stop the emerging second peak and take big and decisive steps,” PM Modi told the chief ministers. The Prime Minister has rung the bell. The states and union territories should gear up to prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had played an exemplary role in controlling the first wave of COVID-19. One expects it to play a similar role this time also. If the administration takes preventive measures well in advance and uses its previous experience, things can be managed. The Prime Minister also warned that we should not become over confident. He asked the chief ministers to enforce the COVID-19 sops in letter and spirit so that no one becomes complacent. When the COVID-19 was at its peak the healthcare system in Jammu got exposed to the hilt as the oxygen plants in the hospitals were unable to cater to the high end ventilators that were provided by the Centre to tackle the critical cases. The people handling the hospitals were caught napping. One hopes that they have learnt from their past mistakes and won’t repeat these if any eventuality arises. Experts have cautioned that the new variant of COVID-19 is deadlier than the first one. The ones who get vaccinated also can catch COVID but their chances of survival are high compared to the ones who are not vaccinated. The herd immunity can only be developed when more than 80% of people across the country get vaccinated. If the second wave breaks out and virus spreads to rural areas it can take a heavy toll on the healthcare system in Jammu and Kashmir. The administration should pay attention towards the instructions of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and put the system in place to prevent the second wave from wreaking havoc in the J&K UT. The vaccination drive has been expedited but getting a COVID-19 jab doesn’t mean that we have defeated the virus. We have to wear masks, maintain social distance to keep ourselves safe. |
