Indoor sports activities suspended in J&K due to surge in COVID-19 cases | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 6: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday suspended all ‘close contact sports’ activities as a precautionary measure in view of surge in COVID-19 infection in the Union Territory. The decision came, a day after all educational institutes, including government and private schools, upto class 12th were closed in view of rise in COVID-19 cases in the Union Territory. According to the order issued by Principal Secretary Youth Services and Sports Department the decision was taken in view of likelihood of young sportspersons getting infected and transmitting infection while playing close contact sports. “Such chances have increased due to the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 infections in J&K,” it read. It further said that it is hereby ordered that all close contact sports like boxing, wrestling, Kho-kho, Thanga-ta, Taekwondo, Wushu and any other sports of similar character shall remain temporally suspended till further order. “All the other outdoor activities shall be conducted after following Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) issued by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.” It added. While primary classes up to class 9 will remain closed for two weeks; classes from 10th to 12th will be shut down for a week till April 11. However, health experts are concerned about the decision of the administration to keep gardens open. The Health experts said that thousands of people are visiting gardens, including Tulip garden and Badamwari garden in Srinagar, with any regards to COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. “If the administration was serious about curtailing the spread of this virus, gardens should be closed and strict action should be taken against people violating SOPs, including not wearing masks and maintaining social distancing in public places,” they added. Amid a spike in COVID cases, Jammu and Kashmir government last month classified Srinagar as an orange zone while all other districts have been declared as green zones, whereas Lakhanpur was declared as a containment zone and Jawahar Tunnel area on either side as Red zones. As many as 442 new positive cases of novel Coronavirus, including 280 from Kashmir division and 162 from Jammu division, were reported on Monday, when two persons died due to COVID-19 in the UT.
