Fear grips Jammu street vendors as COVID second wave intensifies | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 15: As second wave of deadly COVID-19 has intensified during the past one week, street vendors in Jammu fear that they may lose their livelihood in coming days. There are over 3000 street vendors in Jammu who make their ends meet by selling eatables, vegetables and other items on the streets. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on June 01, 2020, had launched Prime Minister Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi Scheme (PM SVANidhi). Aim of this scheme is to provide collateral free working capital loans upto Rs 10,000 of one year tenure, to about 50 lakh street vendors across the country. This scheme has been implemented in full spirit in almost all parts of the country except in Jammu where authorities have failed to act. Notwithstanding tall claims of the authorities this scheme is yet to be properly implemented in Jammu because only 10 percent of street vendors have been covered so far. The loan processing under the scheme commenced on July 02, 2020 but in Jammu authorities had no time to make poor street vendors aware about this scheme. Ironically in Kashmir, special camps were organized to provide financial assistance in various wards of the Srinagar city in order to facilitate the street vendors under PM- Street vendors Atma Nirbhar Nidhi Scheme. As per data an amount of Rs 26 crore has been disbursed among street vendors in Kashmir but in Jammu province nothing much has been done. |
