GMC Jammu: Amid pandemic, 40% posts vacant in Medicine Deptt | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 4: Nearly 40 percent posts of professors are vacant in department of medicine at Government Medical College Hospital Jammu. Sources told Early Times the department has less than half of the sanctioned strength of faculty to overcome the COVID-19 crisis. “Only three units are working in the premiere health institution,” they added. “The GMC Jammu presently has 29 sanctioned posts of faculty including Professors, Associates Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers. There are five posts of Professors and two posts are vacant. Against the four sanctioned posts of Associate Professors, the department has only two, as one post is vacant and one doctor of the medicine department is working in the Cardiology department”, sources said.. They further said that out of six sanctioned posts of Assistant Professor, three posts are vacant. “Only two out of three Assistant Professor working in the department, while third post has been attached in Principal Office, for years, even during this emergency the services of the attached doctor are not being utilised”, they said. They further said that out of 14 posts of lecturers, including eight contractual, are lying vacant. “There are five permanent lecturers in the department, one doctor is engaged on contractual basis, while another contractual doctor is on leave for the last one year, but the authorities have not appointed someone else and the post is lying vacant. Another lecturer appointed for GMC Jammu, is working at GMC Srinagar. Either he should be recalled here or his services should be discontinue from GMC Jammu”, they said, adding that “presently the department has less than half of sanctioned strength practically, but no steps have been taken to strengthen this vital department, even during this pandemic, the government should fix mistakes made in the past.” “There is a huge dearth of physicians in the Medical College. We are facing the second and deadliest wave of COVID, but still, the department has been left at God's mercy. The UT administration should look into the matter and fill these vaccines at the earliest,” sources added. “The medicine department has only three units, instead of at least six units. When you have such a huge shortage of senior faculty, what will you achieve only by creating infrastructure”, said a retired doctor. |
