Poonch: Illegal miners call shots, Irrigation Deptt unmoved | Excavation makes river bed deep, drowning incidents on rise | | Rajesh Tandon Early Times Report
Poonch, June 12: Residents of this frontier district are up in arms against the Irrigation Department for not acting against the illegal miners, who are indiscriminately excavating river beds. Locals told Early Times that due to the “lackadaisical attitude” of the department illegal miners were calling shots and drowning incidents were increasing. The Balar Bridge in Poonch district has become a critical point where illegal excavation of minerals is going on unabated due to which the river bed has become so deep that people particularly children who go for swimming get drowned. “Recently a minor boy got drowned in the river while swimming. This all happened due to indiscriminate excavation of the river bed. The Irrigation Department has never looked into this matter. There is a bund which was constructed by the department but it is now used as a road by the tractors trolley owners, who use this path for ferrying minerals,” alleged a resident Vicky Sharma. “Although the land near the river belongs to the Irrigation Department, it has never bothered to take action against the miners who are exploiting the resources of the department,” he said. Moreover the DC Poonch had also issued an order to restrict any activities near the bridge but the ground situation remained unchanged. Even in Surankote, the same situation is similar but the district administration has taken no action to stop it. When Early Times contacted the SSP Poonch, he said that he would look into the matter and would instruct all the police stations to take action against the illegal miners. |
