Early Times Report

Jammu, June 12: The school education scenario of Jammu and Kashmir has shown a dismal performance in a latest report of Union Government, which grades States and Union Territories on a set of 70 parameters to assess and catalyse transformational change in the education.
According to the latest report of the Performance Grading Index (2019-20) released by Union Education Ministry few days back which is in possession of Early Times, Jammu and Kashmir has been placed at Level V (500-800) in Grade-II, along with seven other States and Union Territories.
Moreover, the Ladakh UT has been placed at bottom of the list in Level X (0-500) and Grade VII. The PGI report is an exercise conducted by Education Ministry, which aims to undertake multi-pronged interventions that could help various States and Union Territory administrations to reach the desired goals regarding the education sector.
Jammu and Kashmir is far below to its neighbouring State of Punjab, which has topped the list and fall in Level-II (901-950) and Grade 1++, while the other neighbouring state Himachal Pradesh, which falls in Level IV (801-850) Grade-I. Only nine States and Union Territories including Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Nagaland, Megalaya and Ladakh are below newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
J&K has been able to improve its PGI Score by 5 to 10 percent in comparison to its previous performance in the year 2018-19.
Pertinently, the PGI Index would propel States & UTs towards undertaking multi-pronged interventions that will bring about the much-desired optimal education outcomes. The PGI is meant to help States and UTs to pinpoint the gaps and accordingly prioritize areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is robust at every level. At the same time it is expected to act as a good source of information for best practices followed by States and UTs which can be shared.
