Erratic power, water supply: Residents take to streets
7/1/2021 11:43:08 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, July 1: With the scorching summer aggravating the problems of unscheduled electricity cuts and irregular drinking water supply, the residents’ protests against power outages and erratic water supply have been on the rise across Jammu province over the past few weeks.
On Thursday, residents of Ward No 5 of Ghagwal town in Samba district resorted to protest demonstration against the Power Development Department (PDD) and Jal Shakti Department (formerly PHE) for their failure to ensure uninterrupted power supply and adequate water supply respectively, in the prevailing hot and humid weather conditions.
Protesting residents thronged the office of Tehsildar in the town alleging inadequate water supply and erratic power supply.
A large number of protesters including women participated in the protest and raised slogans against the PDD and PHE. The residents complained that both the departments have failed to ensure regular power as well as water supply in their locality.
The agitators demanded uninterrupted and adequate water supply.
Meanwhile, irate over the scheduled and unscheduled power cuts, the residents of Samba led by Sarpanch Lavlu Sambyal staged a protest against the Power Development Department.
A large number of people took part in the protest to express their anger against the department. Raising slogans against the PDD, the protestors said that they are facing acute power shortage.
“The power remains off even in night hours and the public, particularly aged and newborn, are suffering badly in this hot and humid weather due to the carelessness of PDD employees,” said several protesters.
Leading the protesting residents, Sarpanch Lavlu Sambyal appealed to LG Manoj Sinha to intervene and fix responsibility on those officers of the PDD who are refusing to take any responsibility with regard to power outages and are not even ready to act to improve the power scenario.
“Samba people are facing severe hardships due to unscheduled power cuts.
We approached every concerned officer but only got hollow promises and nothing was done on the ground to improve the power scenario,” said Sambyal.
He urged the LG to take some positive steps at the earliest to redress the power related woes of the people of Samba and its adjoining areas.
