Early Times Report

Jammu, July 1: Public representatives, who were elected during elections for Block Development Council and District Development Council are feeling choked and suffocated.
Last month a BDC member, Ashaq Hussain Hurrah, of Apni Party, of Magam in Baramulla district attempted to end his life at hotel Shuria Afaq in Humhama, Budgam as the authorities had not allowed him to leave the secured accommodation for nearly a year. “I am living in Baramulla district but have been kept for the last one year in a hotel in Budgam. Instead of Budgam, I should have been given accommodation in Baramulla district. I am facing a traumatic situation as I am not able to meet my two kids and wife,” Hurrah had said.
After he made a suicide attempt, Police lodged a FIR number 178 against him under Sections 309 of IPC in Budgam police station.
A politician while talking to Early Times said, “It’s strange that first you don’t allow the public representatives to meet their family members and then you book them under stringent laws if they want to make their plight known to all.”
“The BDC, DDC and other representatives that were elected through various exercises in the past two years have lost relevance as they have not been able to meet the people and address their grievances. Forget meeting people, they are not even allowed to meet their own family members. Their role has been confined to hoisting tricolor on Republic Day and Independence Day, ” he added.
It may be recalled that earlier this year, seven DDC members, including some Independents, from Budgam district of central Kashmir offered to quit as they were not allowed to move out of the ‘safe houses’ provided by the administration even for touring their constituencies and visiting their families.
Many DDC had written to the authorities that they didn’t need any security and wanted to live with their families.
