Claims confined to papers only
7/1/2021 11:50:34 PM
The government has not been able to address the issue of power crisis in Jammu region and people have been left in lurch in the peak of summer season.
Last month Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had assured the people of Jammu division that a Committee will be constituted by the Chief Secretary to enquire into the recent unscheduled power outage in various areas and the electricity supply scenario will be streamlined.
It appears that LG’s assurance has remained confined to announcement only as the Power Department has failed to deliver. People are facing power cuts and load shedding is continuing.
People of Jammu are asking why the power scenario turned so bad this year. In fact they were hoping that the Power Department will put in more efforts and resources this time around so that COVID-19 patients undergoing home isolation don’t face any problems, but it has not happened. The patients who are on oxygen concentrators within their homes have been left to fend on their own.
During the past fortnight, the Power Department has announced four curtailment schedules. Besides scheduled cuts, the unscheduled outages have made the lives of people miserable.
Despite J&K’s transition into a union territory, the power scenario has not changed, in fact it has become worse than before. It’s astonishing that the Power Department has no proper transmission system and even if the Northern Grid supplies extra power it won’t help.
It’s high time for the Power Department to come out from the shell. The helmsmen need to acknowledge that they have failed to build a system which could cater to the needs of people. Issuing statements and holding meetings is not helping anyone’s cause as the ground situation clearly contradicts the claims of the LG led administration.
The Lieutenant Governor had assured that the enquiry committee headed by the Chief Secretary will probe the unscheduled power cuts, but it appears that after that nothing was done. Had the committee looked into the matter and fixed the responsibility, by now the situation would have improved.
When politicians were ruling Jammu and Kashmir, people could visit the leaders and apprise them about their problems. In the present dispensation bureaucrats are inaccessible and people have been left with nowhere to go. The Centre needs to take note of sufferings of Jammu people and come for their rescue as the J&K administration is making tall claims only on papers.
