BJP Sarpanch, Wife Murdered | | | Earlier this week, a BJP Sarpanch Ghulam Rasool Dar and his wife, a Panch, from Redwani Kulgam were killed inside their rented accommodation in Anantnag district. The couple, as per the police, opted for the rented accommodation on their own over the secure lodging inside a hotel in their hometown of Kulgam. There were reactions from administration and politicians on expected lines but nevertheless murdering someone for the sake of their political ideology was termed barbaric by one and all. It has been condemned in the strongest possible way. Although tacitly, Police admitted that these killings were as consequence of security lapse as Personal Security Officer deployed for the security of the victims failed abjectly being totally absent. It begs the question regarding the accountability for absenteeism. Who allows PSO(s) leave? Is it the protected person who the PSO is supposed to protect or the police establishment which has deputed him? The police administration needs to look into the aspect and fill up the gaps. It is not the first incident where killing has taken place as a result of the apparent lapse on account of the PSO(s). In such a case in July last year, even 11 odd PSOs could not save BJP leader Wasim Bari, his father and brother in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district from falling victim to the bullets. Even as all the personal security officers of the slain BJP leader were dismissed from the service and arrested, incidents are repeating which calls for immediate review. In one case pertaining to killing of another Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and municipal councillor of Pulwama’s Tral, Rakesh Pandit, the victim had even not told his two PSOs about his visit to Tral where he was killed in firing by three gunmen on June 2 this year. While it is true that security lapses are not the only reason for such killings, the administration needs to ponder and come up with a solution to prevent such incidents from repeating time and again. Immediately a review of the security of protected persons should be done, if not carried out already. There is also a need to brief them properly as per the government guidelines and Standard operating procedures laid down by the police. The complacency could prove fatal as already seen in many cases. It is important for the protected person and as well as the police personnel deputed to protect the latter to be aware of the vulnerability and avoid taking even remote chances which could prove lethal. |
