Press, judiciary facing direct assault in J&K: Rahul Gandhi | Journalists unable to write due to fear of reprisal | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his Srinagar visit alleged that Press and Judiciary were facing direct assault from the government. Addressing party workers in Srinagar Gandhi said, “All the institutions, including Press and Judiciary, are under pressure. My friends in press are unable to write what they should write due to the fear of reprisal.” “The Press across the country is under threat as journalists have been terrified,” he added. He said there is not only an assault on Jammu and Kashmir, but other parts of India also like Tamil Nadu, and other states. “One thing is clear that J&K is under direct assault from New Delhi while other parts are facing an indirect attack,” he said. He said the Congress is unambiguous that statehood in full should be restored to Jammu and Kashmir and free and fair Assembly polls should be held. Responding to senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad’s suggestion to bring a bill in the Parliament to press for the restoration of statehood, Rahul said he is not allowed to speak in the Parliament. “I can’t speak about Rafale, unemployment and corruption,” he said. He said during COVID-19 pandemic and after the abrogation of Article 370, he tried to visit Jammu and Kashmir, but was disallowed. The scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family also invoked his family connections with Kashmir. “Today, my family lives in Delhi, before that, they were living in Allahabad and before that, they were living in Kashmir,” he said. “Kashmiriyat lies inside me,” he said. |
