EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Aug 11: A reality check done by a team of Early Times found that several public parks in Gandhi Nagar and Last Morh, Shastri Nagar areas are in ailing condition and crying for attention of the authorities concerned.
Unwanted grass, bushes and weed have come up in the parks which show that these recreational spots had not been maintained from the past sometime.
The overall maintenance is not up to the mark which visitors expect from the authorities concerned.
Residents have expressed grave concern over the dilapidated condition of the parks in their localities mainly due to poor maintenance.
Overgrown bushes, piles of garbage and withering greenery can be seen in most of the parks, they said. They complained that the authority concerned is not making any efforts to improve the poor condition of these parks despite repeated pleas.
Several morning as well as evening walkers beside other regular visitors, who come to the park find these places always littered with garbage.
They complained that these parks are not cleaned on a regular basis and garbage remains scattered for long.
Local residents said that all these parks located in Gandhi Nagar and Last Morh, Shastri Nagar areas were once a good spot for people to walk and relax but over the past few years, they had been lying in a dilapidated condition due to poor upkeep.
They said it was sad to see that the administration was not bothered about the maintenance of recreational places where people could spend quality time, adding that the authorities should come forward with a concrete action plan for proper upkeep of these parks.
Monika Sharma, a working woman and a resident of Gandhi Nagar area while expressing concern over the situation of the parks in her vicinity, said parks were meant to be maintained properly otherwise they simply present an ugly picture.
She said unwanted grass and stagnant water accumulated in the park were blots on its beauty.
“It saddens me to say this that these parks, serve so many purposes in a community-providing playing space to children, socializing space to adults and a healthy environment to people, are in a pathetic state these days thanks largely to the official neglect,” said Monika Sharma.
“Heaps of garbage and over grown grass as well as bushes can be seen everywhere in these ill-maintained parks which once used to be the pride of the society and a common place for community interaction,” she added.
