Shimla, Aug 11: Himalayan Forest Research Institute (HFRI), Shimla, organized a Capacity Building Workshop of Forest Department of Ladakh on 10th & 11th August 2021, at the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa, Leh. Dr. Vaneet Jishtu, the workshop-cum-training coordinator initiated the programme and apprised the audience about the two-day capacity building exercise. The chief guest, Dr. Padma Gurmet, Director-in-Charge, NISR complimented HFRI for undertaking this exercise. He stated that it was very apt in context to Ladakh as it was the dream of our Prime Minister to make Ladakh carbon neutral. The DFO Leh, Mohd Ali as a special guest was also grateful to HFRI for building the capacity of the forest officials. He said that the team from HFRI had travelled a long distance to build the forest departments capacity. Dr Sandeep Sharma Group Coordinator Research, HFRI welcomed the chief guest and the participants and apprised them about the importance of this training programme. He laid stress on the recently published IPCC report and the dangers projected for the country. Dr. VRS Rawat, ex Additional DG by virtual means, detailed about REDD and REDD+ mechanism of UNFCCC right from its adoption as mitigation measures owing to Climate Change and an opportunity for developing countries for further funding, He also elaborated upon the REDD+ strategy developed by ICFRE for MOEF&CC. Further Dr. Ranjeet Rawat Scientist from the Biodiversity and Climate Change Cell, ICFRE Dehradun, also via virtual means, explained the entire process to be adopted while preparing the State REDD+ Action Plan Processes. A total 50 participants took part in this interactive capacity building programme and participants besides the main stakeholders, the Forest Department, included participants from different line departments like the PWD, Agriculture, Hydro-Power, Irrigation Department, Soil Conservation, etc., and included Research organisations/institutions like SKAUST, NISR, GB Pant, ICAR-CAZRI, etc., besides representation from NGO, teachers, farmers and volunteers. The participation covered a larger area of Ladakh UT, Shanku, Kargil, Leh and Nubra. |
