Remove anomaly in ex-gratia relief to victims of mishaps: Tony
1/6/2022 10:21:50 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 6: DDC Member Suchetgarh Taranjit Singh Tony sought immediate removal of anomaly between the ex-gratia relief given to victims killed or injured in accidents and other mishaps and demanded to set up a fixed criteria for the cause of delivering justice to the people in the UT.
In a statement issued to media persons, he questioned the logic behind giving different amounts to the kith and kin of the deceased persons who lost their lives in mishaps like road accidents, stampede, electrocution, landslides, cloudbursts, drowning, thunderstorm, lightning, bomb-blast, cross-firing, etc.
The DDC Member appealed to the LG’s administration to stop the arbitrariness in the matter and come clear with a predetermined policy by setting up predefined criteria to ensure prevalence of justice which unfortunately is missing presently. He said that the amount given should not be on the whims and fancies of the concerned official rather there should be a proper policy in the matter and all should follow the same thus leaving no chance for any kind of prejudice or discrimination as the life has an equal value for poor and the elite.
Taranjit Singh Tony questioned the ex-gratia relief given by LG Manoj Sinha to the people who died in recent stampede at Katra. Comparing the ex-gratia relief in the aforesaid case and the one given to deceased who lost life in BRO Bridge mishap in Koulpur in Samba District, Tony questioned the logic behind disparity in the amount given in both the cases. He said that deceased Madan Lal, resident of Chandu Chak, Tehsil R S Pura was given a compensation of Rs 1 lakh by the DC Samba which is far less than the ex-gratia given to those who lost their lives in Katra Stampede which is intriguing and the LG’s administration should come up with a reasonable justification in the matter. He slammed the J&K administration that looking into the ensuing polls in Uttar Pradesh it has given Rs 10 lakh to Katra stampede deceased’s NoKs and later additional Rs 5 lakh as most of the victims were from UP.
The DDC member demanded that Madan Lal who was a casual labourer in BRO should have been given Rs 15 lakh if the LG doesn’t differentiate between the death of a person from UP and Jammu.
Tony said a policy in this regard should be drafted as soon as possible to stop the rampant discrimination which one can gauge well with the comparison of the two aforesaid cases.
