Ex-CMs' security to be cut in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 6: Jammu and Kashmir is all set to reduce the strength of the Special Security Group (SSG) personnel who guard former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti. The SSG is an elite unit of the police created in 2000 to guard top politicians in the state. Farooq Abdullah is also guarded by the National Security Guards. Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have Z-plus security cover. In a letter to the Additional Director General of Police (Security), the J&K’s Home Department said that based on the recommendations of the Security Review Coordination Committee, it has been decided to reduce the strength of SSG to the "bare minimum". The order asked the police to post a suitable number of personnel in the security wing for these persons. It said the remaining SSG personnel should be sent to other wings to make the best use of their knowledge, training and expertise. “All the resources (including vehicles, access control gadgets) of the SSG ... be transferred to the security wing," the order read. |
