Sujma faces pesky power cuts | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 16: The government’s tall claims promising uninterrupted electricity to the Union territory residents have fallen flat, as residents here in Green Valley Sujma near Shiv Mandir, claim they are facing long power cuts. The locals said that they are facing prolonged "full day" power cuts in this cold season. "In absence of the power supply, we face inconvenience,” they said. A local resident, Mohmmad Aslam, said, “Most of the time there are power cuts in this area. With Covid-, the problem is felt even more acutely as work from home and online education have become the norm,” he said. Another resident who works in private sector said that the Power cuts are the biggest problem in the locality. “Lots of people suffer because of it. I had my online meeting yesterday, which I have to cancel just because my laptop was not charged and my phone’s battery was also almost dead,” A house wife who lives near Shiv Mandir, said, “Power supply was uninterrupted in the November. But it was not the case in the December and now in January. There are power cuts every now and then which are making it a lot difficult to do the daily chores even. All work comes to a stop till the power comes. The power stays only for few minutes and then goes off for hours together” “Working from home has become almost impossible due to the power cuts. I could not attend a lot of important video conferencing meetings and missed many deadlines. I have been struggling to work for two hours straight without a power cut,” said Manish, a local resident. “We have had full day power cuts in the past one week. I registered numerous complaints but nothing has happened till date". Another resident added that this disruption is mostly in the wee hours. The officials must immediately address the issue,” he said. The residents also said that they have also been facing voltage fluctuations. According to locals, the electronic devices in their houses have been damaged due to voltage problem. "When informed, the officials provide a temporary solution and the issue begins again in a couple of hours". A deputation of people few days before met the concerned executive engineer, Power Development Department, and sought immediate redressal of their problems. “We have been assured by the executive Engineer that the supply and distribution system would be streamlined. If problems persist, we will be forced to take to the roads against the failure of the government to ensure a proper electricity supply,” they said. According to the officials, the problems differ in each area and are mostly technical faults. The officials said most problems are attended to as soon as possible and they will perform checks in these areas for any issues. However the concerned JE admitted that the area is facing acute electricity crisis as the infrastructure is unable to bear the load of the power demand. The official however also blamed people for the illegal use of electricity. “People mostly Kashmiris in this area are using crude heating gadgets which are causing power cuts," adding “If people will use the supply as advised by the department there will be no power outages." The officer further said that the department is taking all measures to provide electricity as per the schedule. |
