Amid record COVID cases Forest Deptt organizes trekking expedition | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 16: While the Jammu district is breaking all previous records of single-day highest Corona positive cases, different departments are facing pressure from the higher-ups to conduct outdoor activities for publicity. The incumbent Jammu and Kashmir government is more worried over publicity rather than working on the ground to minimize peoples’ misery. It is a coincidence that on Saturday the J&K government announced weekend restrictions to break the chain of the virus but same time the Department of Wildlife Protection today organized a trekking expedition to Surinsar-Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary from Mansar to Bari Kap covering a distance of 7.5 Kilometres. As per the official handout issued by the government, about 100 participants including students, scholars, academicians, nature enthusiasts, local youth, and PRI members representing various districts participated in the event. The participants were grouped into six groups, each group comprising 15- 20 participants. About a 20-minute gap was kept between a group and the following group. Authorities claimed that the participants followed strict COVID protocol, maintaining social distance and using masks all through the trek but there was no urgency to organize this event amid weekend restrictions. Sources said that it was all due to pressure from the higher-ups that local officers could not dare to postpone the event. Sources in the administration that higher-ups were mounting pressure on all departments to conduct activities and shared videos so as to forward the same at a higher level to create an impression that the J&K government is going an excellent job on the ground. “Amid a surge in COVID cases employees of all departments have been engaged in unproductive activities for publicity”, sources said. |
