Vendors removed from Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 28: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation on Friday removed vendors who had put up their stalls on footpaths and roads at various places here. Led by Commissioner Athar Aamir Khan, the SMC employees removed the stalls from Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Maharaja Bazar and Jahangeer Chowk. Talking to media persons, Khan reiterated that the drive to remove vendors and shopkeepers who are occupying roads that make the movement on roads difficult for pedestrians and create traffic jams would continue. “SMC will continue the action against the vendors and shopkeepers who are occupying roads,” he said. "We have time and again requested shopkeepers and vendors not to occupy roads in an unauthorized manner. There is no justification for anyone to occupy a common road or footpath. Neither religion nor human sense allows it." Khan said the authorities were looking for places where “vendor zones” could be established in Srinagar. “We are not going to tolerate anybody occupying roads or footpaths in Srinagar." The drive evoked sharp criticism from the vendors. "We are small people who earn livelihood by selling items. By removing us and snatching our goods, the government is not doing anything good," complained a vendor. |
