Inaccessible Babus

The Anganwadi workers who have been at the forefront of fighting COVID-19 pandemic in Jammu and Kashmir are not being heard. Their genuine grievances are falling flat.
It’s not only the Anganwadi workers who are complaining about the helmsmen not paying attention to them. The casual labourers and the daily wagers, including safai-karamcharis, have similar complaints. It appears that everyone in Jammu and Kashmir is fed up with the prevailing bureaucratic rule.
The common complaint that seems to be prevalent is that the bureaucrats are inaccessible and they don’t want to meet anyone. The voices to have democratic government back are becoming shriller. People are eagerly waiting for the Delimitation Commission to submit its report so that the ball can be set rolling for the maiden assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The people managing the J&K affairs should understand that they cannot ignore the people and their own employees. They have to listen to them and address their issues. Officials running the system have been claiming that during the past two years the governance has improved and the J&K is on the path of development. If it’s so then why are people unhappy? Why are they hitting the streets and staging protests to get heard. The decisions which the helmsmen have taken during the past two years have been completely unilateral. People have not been taken into confidence.
After J&K’s transition into a Union Territory many people were of the opinion that things will change for good and they would get a chance to put across their view but the reverse has happened. The officials don’t want to listen to anyone. They seem to have started believing that they can do nothing wrong. The height of arrogance can be gauged from the fact that they are not ready to meet anyone.
Even the BJP leaders from Jammu on record have said that the government is being run by the bureaucrats and they have no role to play in it. The Centre needs to take note of the resentment that’s prevailing among every section of the society. It needs to pull up the officials, who are behaving as “monarchs.” They need to be told that they are public servants and they cannot run away from the people.
