Caution Holds the Key | | | The internet has changed the perspective of people towards life as remaining connected with anyone has become very easy. Personal communication and expression of ideas and emotions are happening too quickly. Number of people using social media is increasing with each passing day. There is no harm in people coming closer to each other and interacting with each other but one has to remain extra cautious during disclosing his/her personal details. There is a need to remain cautious on various fronts, more so on online platforms. Crimes such as revenge porn, cyberstalking and slut shaming and hateful conduct are increasing on the social media platforms. Some, rather occasional controversies are subsumed over a period. However many problems remain and justice delivery mechanisms appear to be very complex and inaccessible to women and the marginalised when it comes to cyber crimes. The need of the hour is to simplify means for justice delivery and create awareness about the problems one can face by disclosing his personal information to every stranger. The increase in use of internet has led to massive spike in cases related to cybercrime. The law enforcement agencies need to train their personnel to fight the criminals who are intruding into the virtual world. Besides the cyber forensic facilities need to be improved. There are several laws to prevent such crimes. The Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 (21 of 2000) has provisions regarding cheating by personation (section 66D), violation of privacy (section 66E), publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form (section 67), publishing or transmitting material containing sexually explicit act, etc. in electronic form (section 67A), publishing or transmitting material depicting children in the sexually explicit act, etc. in electronic form (section 67B), etc. There is also a scheme namely Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC), funded under Nirbhaya Fund, under which an online Cyber Crime reporting portal, (www.cybercrime.gov.in) has been launched, to enable public to report complaints pertaining to rape/ gang rape imageries or sexually explicit content, Child Pornography/ Child Sexual Abuse Material. This portal facilitates the public to lodge all types of cybercrimes with special focus on crimes against women and children. One cannot stop people from using the internet and social media but the laws can be applied to prevent fraudsters from cheating the people. There have been instances where people have been deprived of their savings and earnings due to fraudsters hacking their back accounts. People who are tech-savy need to remember that prevention is better than cure. |
