A large number of people lost their lives due to pollution
3/3/2022 11:28:50 PM

Vijay Garg

What would be more ironic than this that on the one hand, there has been a constant concern about the deteriorating environment for a long time, various measures are suggested to solve the problems arising out of it, on the other hand the ground situation is getting worse day by day. The condition is that due to the multi-level upheavals in the environment, the world is being harmed in different ways and due to pollution alone millions of people lose their lives every year. These facts, which have come to the fore in a recent report on this issue, are enough to raise concerns once again that over the past two decades, due to the dissolved air pollution, a large number of people have died. According to a new report by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE), the number of deaths due to a sharp increase in particulate matter (PM 2.5) in the air has increased by at least two and a half times in the last twenty years. It has been told in the ‘Environment Report of India’ that more than six million people have died in the last two decades due to air pollution worldwide. In India alone, 10.67 lakh people left the world during this period.
The strange thing is that the number of deaths due to war or other direct causes is felt throughout the world, but due to pollution, such a large number of people lose their lives and it is not causing any such concern. for which the need for immediate solution is felt. According to the report, in 2019, four lakh seventy six thousand infants died globally in the first month of life due to health effects associated with exposure to air pollution.
Of these, one lakh sixteen thousand children died in India. Obviously, the statistics of deaths due to pollution are appalling. Most of the people who lost their lives due to this problem could have been saved, if appropriate measures were taken around the world to prevent the climate from reaching deadly levels in time. But the truth is that despite frequent events and conferences on this issue around the world for the last several decades, the picture of the effect of pollution has worsened.
Significantly, PM 2.5 are those microscopic particles present in the air, which penetrate deeply into the body and then increase inflammation in the lungs and respiratory tract.
Due to its effect, the immune system weakens due to diseases in the body and the risk of many types of respiratory problems increases. In 2019, poor air quality was the fourth leading risk factor for early death worldwide. It also went beyond just high blood pressure, tobacco use, and poor diet.
The question is why this aspect and factor of air pollution has been a well-known problem for so long and despite everything being known about it, why no concrete steps could be taken to prevent it! Whereas, there is widespread concern about the deteriorating condition of the environment and its solution at the national and international level. After all, what are the reasons that the rich and developed countries, which generate carbon emissions, at every opportunity shirk their responsibility on this issue and blame the seriousness of the problem on the underdeveloped or developing third world countries?
