Sawmills get electricity but no bills, thanks to PDD

Early Times Report

Sunderbani, Sept 23: The Power Development Department (PDD) in Sunderbani is in the news again, that too for the same old reason: encouraging corrupt practices.
In a fresh expose, it has been learnt that a criminal nexus is going in between the corrupt PDD officials and some sawmill owners in the area.
As per sources, one of Nohoti is running two sawmills in the village. But the mill owner is never served electric bill at the end of the month.
Same is the case with other sawmill owners in various other villages like Barnara, Devak Siya and Margallah, where the sawmills are operating but without paying any electricity tariff.
The people of the area allege that almost all officials of the PDD Sunderbani are hand in glove with these sawmill owners.
A Junior Engineer in the PDD, Vijay Kumar, denied that his department is taking money from the sawmill owners.
Kumar however could not give a satisfactory reply when asked how these sawmillowners are running their businesses without having legal electric connections.
When contacted Assistant Executive Engineer, Ravikant Khajuria said, "Why don't you take up the issue with Power Minister so that he can take action and transfer people."Ironically, Khajuria said he would prefer to be transferred back to his native city Jammu.
It is pertinent to mention here that official guidelines for running a sawmill say that it should be at least 2 km from schools and one km from forestland.
Besides, anNoC has to be procured from the Sarpanch of the area after which an electricity connection can be given.
"The defaulters generally take TPC (temporary power connection) that only runs for three to four days, but then go on working on the same receipt for years together by tampering with the date of the receipt which is obviously done by the PDD," said Kasturi Lal, a resident of Nohoti.
He said saw mill is only 60 meters away from primary school Nohoti.
Local residents also said that most of these sawmill owners are close associates of the local MLA who is allegedly running a 'fear industry' in Sunderbani.
