Kashmir unrest: Youth killed in clashes, toll 87

SRINAGAR, Sept 23: The death toll in the continuing Kashmir valley reached 87 today as a youth was killed in clashes between the protesters and the forces in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Meanwhile, authorities imposed curfew in some of the areas of the Srinagar city to thwart protests .
Reports said that 19 year old youth identified as Waseem Ahmad Lone son of Nazir Ahmad Lone, resident of Nadihal, Sopore sustained injuries during clashes between youth and forces in the area. Waseem later on succumbed to his injuries at District Hospital Baramulla.
Reports said that in Bandipora security forces resorted to tear gas shelling to foil a rally. Some people sustained injuries during the incident. In Hajin clashes erupted between youth and security forces during which security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth with some of the protesters sustaining injuries. Some civilians sustained injuries at Saloosa-Kreeri after security forces foiled a rally.
Reports said that at least 12 persons sustained injuries during the clashes between youth and security forces at Gulshanabad, Charar-i-Sharif in Central Kashmir's Budgam district. Protests also erupted between youth and security forces in the Chadoora area of Budgam district during which forces tear gas canisters to disperse the youth who were pelting stones on them.
Security forces used tear gas canisters to foil proposed rallies at Old Barzulla, Natipora and Rambagh areas in the summer capital. This led to clashes between youth and security forces in these areas. Clashes erupted between youth and security forces in Batmaloo area with security forces using tear gas canisters to disperse the agitating youth. Clashes erupted between youth and security forces in Eidgah, Habba Kadal and Noorbagh areas during which security forces used tear gas canisters to disperse the youth.
Reports said that around 20 persons sustained injuries during the clashes between youth and security forces in Kokernag area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Protests were also reported from Pampore area in South Kashmir's Pulwama district, however, no one was injured these protests. Some of the arrests were made by security forces in Pampore during the preceding night.
Meanwhile, authorities imposed curfew in areas falling under Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Batmaloo police stations.
Elsewhere, restrictions were imposed in order to scuttle the call of protests as given by the separatists in different parts of Kashmir valley.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 87 persons including four policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan.
