Contest unlikely on MLC polls, 12 file papers | Coalition fields 6 candidates, PDP 2 | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 18: In what it appears that there will be no contest for the 8 seats of Legislative Council, polls for which have been scheduled for March 7, the coalition partners NC and Congress fielded six candidates each , leaving two other seats for opposition PDP in accordance with arithmetic of votes in the electoral college of election process. In all twelve candidates today filed their nomination papers for the elections to vacant seats of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council before the Secretary Legislative Assembly here today, the last date of filing papers. In presence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other senior leaders of the party including ministers, Davinder Singh Rana, Showkat Hussain and Abdul Majeed from National Conference filed their papers. From Congress, Muzaffar Ahmad Parray , Naresh Gupta and Rani Bloeria filed their papers whereas Naeem Akhtar Andrabi and Yashpal Sharma are the candidates of PDP for Council polls. Even as four other candidates also filed their papers against different vacancies but their candidature is insignificant in terms of the number of votes they would be able to garner in the event of contest. Other candidates who filed their nomination papers include Shuban Krishen Dudha, Mohammad Iqbal, Sardar Kaaloo Khan Hamdard and Mohammad Amin Bhat . Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, member of Council of Ministers, Member, Rajya Sabha, and President Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, Prof. Saifudin Soz and senior members of NC, Congress and PDP were present at the time of filing of nomination papers. Secretary, Legislative Assembly Mohammad Ramzan is the returning officer for the Biennial Elections to the Legislative Council. |
